One Minute of Horror – 2016 Halloween Audio Contest

Hello, MUP Nation!

This is yet to be announced on the show, but I wanted to kick things off here first.

MUP is launching an audio contest for the 2016 Halloween season! The parameters are “One Minute of Horror.” So whatever you can do with one minute of audio is fair game – reading a very short story (BTW a “Drabble” story is about 100 words), a poem, fake newscasts, history, maybe a spectacular minute of an actual play? Or submissions can be totally wordless: audio landscapes, sound effects, playing an instrument, any combo of the above - whatever your dark imagination cooks up!

There will be First, Second and Third place prizes. And those prizes will include real loot sent to you by mail, including at some game material, but we’re still working out exactly what to send and some of that will be a surprise. Mystery envelope of eldritch surprises. Watch this thread as we announce prize info.

Deadline is midnight US Eastern Standard Time on October 31st, 2016.

Important caveats: all material must be copyright free, and any Creative Commons material must be credited appropriately.
Keep language clean enough to play on the show without bleeping.

Submitting your piece also gives us permission to play it on the show whether you win or not.

Send your one-minute audio files as attachments to: feedback@mu-podcast.com. Please put "One Minute Horror" in the subject line so we can tell which messages are contest entries. If you want to go with quick and raw, you could also submit using the Speakpipe link on the right of our home page.

Please post a message if you have any questions or even if you just want to chat about ideas. I’ll be happy to help with tech issues, like how to send the best audio files, or how to download and use free mixing tools like Audacity if you want to get fancy.

The pieces will be judged by all four hosts.

Winning Criteria: Creative, Original, Creepy.

If you want to add sound effects and copyright-free layers to your submission, a great place to start is: https://www.freesound.org/. Please be sure to fully credit the sound files you use.

If you want to do some mixology, you can download a free multi-track audio editing program called Audacity via: http://www.audacityteam.org/

Good luck, and get creepy!

Hmm, well I do have Audacity installed already. Is there a one entry a person limit, or could I submit both of my ideas? (Mine will be in the found-audio category, as well, you've heard my voice and it isn't the scary type.)

I've started working on one :-)

It's gonna be keeping it below 1min that's hard for me; remember the audio I sent in once before :o

Good question, that. We had not set a submission limit. So yes, feel free to submit both ideas! I will add, however, that we would not let someone sweep First, Second and Third Place with multiple submissions. We would decide which of the contestant's submissions we like best, and weigh it against others for 'medal' placement.

Question: Can I use creative commons sounds? I've got a 853Hz + 960Hz duel tone sound (which I'm not even sure you can copyright...) under the Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike 3.0 Unported license. Are you OK with that being on the show? I've got a 1050Hz sine wave tone that is public domain that I can use instead if you prefer, but it is a bit less creepy. (Bonus points if anyone can figure out what I'm recording from that.)

Also, is it OK if I use bits of old MU Podcast shows in this? I need a clip of some people talking as if they are on a radio show.
