A Blast From The Past is an endless source of good writing and ideas. A historian's blog, every article is extensively researched and are often about outstanding historical mysteries.
(I'll make it into the Card Catalog eventually!)
- Sorcerers and soulstealers: hair-cutting panics in old China One of the best articles on there. It details the myths and history of sorcerers stealing souls and controlling people via stealing their hair in great detail.
- Aqua Tofana: slow-poisoning and husband-killing in 17th century Italy A mysterious poison that leaves no trace, used by noble women in 17th century Italy.
- Islam’s medieval underworld Need details of how thieves worked in the middle ages under Islam? Have I got you covered.
- A visit to the underworld: the unsolved mystery of the tunnels at Baia: This brings in Cumæan sibyl and tunnels of unknown providence, purpose and origin dug into a hellish volcanic field. Hundreds and hundreds of meters of passages.
- The Villisca Axe Murders 100 years on: I've not read this one yet, but I'm looking forward to it.
- The child murder that gave voodoo its bad name: Again, haven't read this one yet.
- Dreamtime voyagers: Australian Aborigines in early modern Makassar Details of pre-European contact with native Australians and how they signed on to ships, some winding up as far away as Japan. Would be a cool character concept.
